About the Instrument
This viola has a gorgeous, lush sound, simultaneously clear and complex. Easy to play, its commanding timbre makes it an excellent choice for a violist searching for a smaller viola. While this is clearly a special instrument, it does not come with certification of authenticity. Considering its age, it is unsurprising this viola has undergone a few repairs. A soundpost patch has two cleats for reinforcement, and a small bass f-hole crack has one cleat. On the treble side, there are two cleats on the upper crack. A lower treble crack is not one of concern, and therefore bears no repairs. The viola’s back is in remarkably excellent condition, and the ribs and scroll look equally exceptional. This viola is in very good condition and ready to be played.

About the Maker
Andreas Resle (1720-1756) was born in Augsburg, Germany where he apprenticed under Georg Aman. Resle remained in Bavaria, eventually settling in Füssen in 1740 where he became arguably one of the best luthiers who lived and worked in the city in his lifetime. His models are developed from Aman’s work, with exceptional crafstmanship and detail. Resle selected excellent woods for his instruments, often beautiful back figures, with auburn varnish that frequently darkened with time. Resle instruments are sought worldwide for their gorgeous sound and ease of play. The Royal Collection of Musical Instruments in Berlin holds one of his violins in its collection.
