About the Instrument
This cello has a gorgeous sound—resonant and responsive, with a gratifying sizzle. It has a vivid gold varnish that highlights the strong medium curl falling from the center joint of its two-piece maple back. The ribs and scroll are made of slightly plainer wood. This cello is in fine condition.

About the Maker
Antonio Capela (1932- ) is a contemporary luthier based in Espinho, Portugal. Born in Anta to the renowned Portuguese luthier Domingo Capela, the younger Capela learned the craft from his father before receiving a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation to study with Étienne Vatelot in Paris and the Morizot brothers in Mirecourt. Capela then left France for Cremona to study at the International School of Violin Making under Pietro Sgarabotto and Simone Fernando Sacconi. After a year of study, Capela quickly made his mark by consistently receiving awards for his work. He won First Prize for his violin in Cremona in 1965, earning that same distinction again in 1969, as well as First Prize in Poznań, Poland in 1967 and 1972. In 1991, the Presidência do Concelho de Ministros in Portugal awarded Capela the Medal of Cultural Merit. Over the decades of his career, Capela has traveled worldwide to serve as a judge for international competitions, is a founding member of the European Violin and Bow Builders Association (he holds the post of Vice President), and is a member of the International Violin and Bow Builders Association.
